Mission

The Charles J. Muth Museum of Hinchliffe Stadium, under the auspices of Montclair State University, is dedicated to preserving and honoring the legacy of Hinchliffe Stadium—one of the last remaining Negro League stadiums and the hometown field of trailblazer Larry Doby. Through dynamic public programs, educational initiatives, and community engagement, the Museum promotes a deeper understanding of Hinchliffe’s vital role in American social history and its enduring power to unite the diverse communities of Paterson.
Our Vision for the Future
We envision a future where the stories of Hinchliffe’s past inspire generations to engage with issues of equity, inclusion, and civic pride. We strive to become a national leader in the interpretation of athletic and cultural history, a dynamic hub for education and dialogue, and a cornerstone of community life in Paterson—where history is not only preserved, but activated to shape a more just and connected society. We seek to become a nationally recognized center for education, preservation, and public engagement rooted in the legacy of the Negro Leagues and the story of Larry Doby. We envision a future where strategic investment allows us to expand our reach, deepen our impact, and serve as a catalyst for community pride, cultural understanding, and lifelong learning. With the support of visionary funders, we aim to ensure that Hinchliffe Stadium’s powerful history continues to inspire, educate, and unite future generations.

Office of Community Engagement & Partnerships
Established by President Koppell in 2023, the Office for Community Engagement and Partnerships (OCEP) is the core unit at Montclair State University with responsibility to advance University’s community engagement mission, to ensure Montclair is a partner and asset to the region and State, to mobilize the University’s response to community-identified issues and concerns and to support faculty and staff in delivering sustainable and substantiative engagement and outreach activities.

The Charles J. Muth Museum of Hinchliffe Stadium is a division of OCEP and, along with the One Square Mile Project, we are situated at the heart of the University's goal to establish itself as an anchor institution within the City of Paterson.
