The story of America runs through Paterson

Since its founding in 1792 as America’s first planned industrial city, Paterson has embodied the pursuit of opportunity and continues to inspire people to imagine what is possible.

For nearly a century, legendary Hinchliffe Stadium has overlooked the Great Falls - long before the surrounding area was designated the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park. As steeped in history as the city itself, Hinchliffe has been home to everything from Negro League baseball and demolition derbies to amateur boxing, football, and even labor rallies. A designated stop on the New Jersey Black Heritage Trail, it has played a central role in the community’s cultural life and is home field to barrier-breaker and baseball Hall of Famer Larry Doby

The Charles J. Muth Museum opened its doors in 2024 to preserve and honor the history of Hinchliffe Stadium. Through educational opportunities for students from kindergarten through college, professional development for educators, and engaging public programs that contribute to the economic vitality of the community, the Muth Museum is continuing the Stadium’s legacy of civic unity and pride.

With the support of visionary funders like you, the Muth Museum will ensure that Hinchliffe’s powerful story of equity, inclusion, and civic pride continues to inspire, educate, and unite future generations.
